My old spare ball for years was a pound lighter than my strike ball. (I mainly used it for 4, 7, 8's - Lefty.) My thinking was that since the majority of the time I was throwing my heavy strike ball, on the spares, my arm naturally threw the ball faster, more skid so it wouldn't have a chance to curve.
But talking to some people at the alley, they said that throwing a lighter ball can throw off your strike ball when you go back to the heavier weight. It made since to me, so my new strike ball that I purchased with my new strike ball is the same weight. It didn't seem to affect my accuracy at all.
It'll be nice to see what everyone else thinks.

Most of the pros use 14, and some use 13lb spare balls, just to be able to throw it harder and have all skid and a lot of ricochet.

BubbaRay,
How say you about this? I throw "man weight" for strikes and spares ;)

my spare ball is 16lbs like my other balls. I used to throw a 16lb regular ball and have a 14lb spare. And i found myself over throwing the spare ball too much. I have had luck with my 16lb tuff so far...

I throw 15's for everything too, but next time I need a spare ball it will be 14 if not lighter, makes it so much easier.

I throw 15's with all my stuff.
i did at one point have a spare ball that was a 16, thru it to slowly as i throw them with my normal strike release.
having more luck with my 15lb SpareTire. but when i do new to replace it,
it will be with a 14 for the reason i will be able to keep my normal release and swing but as it is lighter it will go faster and straighter.
I HOPE

I use ther same weight ball for my spare ball as my strike ball. You could drop a pound in weight but it's a matter of preference. I use the same weight so that I don't over throw my strike ball after shooting a spare with a lighter ball.

I actually bought a new 12# smokin inferno off ebay ( 35USD) for my first spare ball.I didn't see the need to knock down a single pin with 15#. It saved reps in my arm for first balls.

I use the same weight for all.
