Ive have been bowling with BWS with the factory 4000 finish on it since i got it, Thinking about taking the surface down to 2000, what direction or proper way should this be done, what kind of ball reaction will i get. if i dont like can it be change back to 4000. i just got back into bowling after 5 yrs all this stuff is new to me any info would help.

A duller surface will create more friction with the lanes. This does not necessarily translate into "more hook", it depends on the conditions. The ball will react earlier (transition sooner) to the lane condition that it would have at 4000 and not save up as much energy. This will work well if you're finding that your speed and revs arent matching up... such as too much speed. If you're finding that your ball is breaking a tad later than expected and not quite making it back to the pocket then this is a good place to start. If you go on to a much dryer condition then your ball will be more prone to burn up and not have enough energy to make it back to the pocket as well. It takes some experience to be able to recognize if your ball is not making back because it's breaking too late, as opposed to burning up. If you don't like the results you can always take the ball back to 4000 if that best suits your game or try adding polish to the ball at 2000 to get it so it stores more energy and transitions later.

When I first got my BWS I didn't get the reaction I expected which I was told was because I don't have a lot of revs. The pro shop where I bought it recommended bringing it down to 2000 and that helped.

I just did this exact thing today. I have a BWP that I almost gave up on-actually I hated it! I have a Beat'n for the heavy stuff (best ball I've ever owned), & when the the shot would breakdown I would go to my pearl and would not get any backend out of it-with the most aggressive layout. Had it taken down to 2000 unpolished-what a difference! It's now the ball that I thought I was buying. I'm in the same boat, I was out of bowling for about 16 years (last ball was a Angle+).

Hey Hammertime, I just noticed your from Toledo. I got my adjustments made on my Black Widow Pearl by Keith @ Shotmakers in Glass Bowl Lanes today. He helped my situation out a lot.

The lower the grit the early the ball starting hooking. This means the ball will start using it energy sooner, so it could bleed off too much or be just right.

From what I have seen with adjusting my stuff and my wifes stuff.

She has decent speed and revs, but not alot of either. Stroker at 14-15 mph. She has generally liked her stuff duller.
Track Rule Green or Grey Scotch Brite
Ebonite Overtime Grey Scotch Brite
Hammer No Mercy 2000 (She liked this polished for a while)
Sauce Gold Scotch Brite (Did not like it polished, not at all.)

Higher Grit and Polish delay reaction, create a sharper breakpoint and greater entry angle to the pocket.

All of the adjustments are fairly quick and should not take alot of surface off the ball. Its a surface change. Unless you have alot of track wear.
