Well Today was my first one on one session with my son. I don't have a video camera but the Picture camera takes short videos so I was able to use it and play it back in slow motion for him to see. Before we started bowling I had him stand on the approach and just worked on his slide before he was not sliding at all. Just my luck the batteries were dead. (both sets) Wife has a problem charging them.. O well. I did get a couple of videos to help show him what he was doing wrong.
I wish I could have gotten more videos. O well. His major flaw was follow through and on the 3rd to 4th step he gets his feet moving too quick and has a little hop like step. The less he done it the better he bowled. For the most part he listened to what I said he was doing wrong and also saw a couple of videos to show him and he done well..
Anyone have any advice on how I can get him to quit flipping his wrist out like a back up ball? Also on how I can talk him into not taking that little hop in the 3rd step? I had told him to slow his feet down
Here is a video of him. (the last one of him taking one of me so I could show him on video how to follow through)

everyone told me to use a hand shake grip to start.. just start normal and pretend ur giving a hand shake at release.. also on the hop, tell him to slide and stop moving and keep balance... he will realize with the hop it is really hard. This method helped me with my hop, so it could work with him..

Humm I had forgot about the hand shake trick.. LOL.. I went through the level one Coaching class YEARS ago. So any tips are welcome.. LOL
So as far as the hop. Your saying to tell him to Slide to a Stop and don't move while keeping his balance.. Right?
Thanks for the tip. He done much better towards the end after showing him what he was doing. He would come back and even tell me what he done wrong. :) Which is a good thing he is able to feel what he does when it's wrong.
Thanks again for the tips.

yeah like if he keeps doing the hop tell him to bowl and stand still after he finishes the slide and release. Then if he keeps falling off tell him not to hop to fix it.. and tell him he can get a treat if he does it like 15 times in a row or something.. lol.. i mean i still bowl better if i have candy to look forward to or something and im 15! haha.. so give him candy if he does it a certain amount of times in a row without the hop.. it would give him more motivation =P

dont let him know hes getting one for christmas =P then tell him he could get one if he eliminates it =P haha i know that when i was that age my parents said i could get a new ball if i bowled a 200.. So i kept trying and trying.. it took me 4 weeks after they told me that to get a 200 while i had a 100 average in league at the time LOL!

LOL He has no Idea he is getting the ball or the new shoes. Right now he just uses a Maxim ball and the rental shoes.. He will have a entry level reactive to use after Christmas. :D

I agree about the hand shake technique. Also get him a football, or one of those nerf footballs for at the house and have him practice that release for the football to when he releases it right the ball has a perfect spiral, have him keep throwing it into the couch. After doing this for so long it will become muscle memory and he will do the same release when he gets the ball in his hand if you just tell him to release it like the football his mind will have that drilled into it.
As for the hop I would just say for him to keep his feet lower to the ground and walk just like he normally walks walking on a sidewalk, have him do approaches without the ball just like he would walk normally, just have him pretend the balls there and take an approach but just walk like he normally would like if he wasnt on the lane, then put the ball in his hand and have him repeat it. Muscle memory is a huge thing when first learning to bowl, being able to repeat things shot after shot will make him advance highly in his game.
Keep us posted on how he's improving and if you need help.

Good tip on the Football.
As far as the aproach well we worked on that over and over without a ball. from where to stand and sliding.. He does good if he slows his feet down a little. That video was during the first game about the 5th frame. He has done better after watching a couple others that he hopped really bad in. But still does it.. I guess I could play Drill Instructor.. If you Hop you have to give me 10 clean approaches without a ball.. LOL (J/K)
This was our first of many one on one training sessions. I did not bowl but 4 frames total the first 3 of his games. The 2 times was him trying to get me on the video I uploaded of me.. LOL
Then we both bowled a game together before leaving. Next time I will work with him for 2 games then let him bowl a couple without any coaching.

A good thing also would be to have him watch you bowl when your bowling with him and he may want to copy what your doing with your approach, believe me when I was a kid just starting and you see someone do something well you want to imitate it. I copied stuff from my dad (quiet Bubba lol :D ) when I was younger because I saw him throwing good with what he was doing so I wanted to do good and copying is the easiest way, now my dad learns things from me so its kind of switched but thats how it started.
When I was younger my dad use to have me watch old videos he had of Earl Anthony (my idol) and Mark Roth and a lot of the older guys that had great form, most of my stuff I copied from Mark cause lets face it there will never be another Earl, but by watching people do it the right way you start to learn thats how it should be done and he'll learn.

Now that might be a problem.. LOL.. I have been out of bowling for 8 years or so. I know I need work to get my full game back and I don't really want him to see me do something wrong and him copy it.. LOL
The biggest thing I have been stressing to him is follow through, and slow his approach down.. Once he gets a good approach then he can step it up a notch.

That right there is why I suggested Earl, had a very slow approach and a great follow through, was just silky smooth.

I went torhugh about 99% of this today... I did not go over the 3,4,5 step only the 4 step and didn't go over ball weight.
I mean right down to a T.. Before I put his name in the computer we went to the foul line and walked back. (twice) Then went over lane width, length and oil on the lane.

on foot work: Have stand at the foul line and face the ball return heels just in front of the line. Have him take four normal steps, that's where he should start on the approach. Then get him to practice walking. He looks alot like me at the same age, I had the same hop.
looking pretty good so far!!

I done all that before the lane was turned on.. LOL Even once more while bowling I had him practice the approach again without a ball. I will try to work with him more Sunday..

i was told something similar except to take 4 1/2 steps, to account for the slide.

That's correct 4 1/2 That is why we had to do it twice.. He went 4 steps then turned around to me becuase I was still at the line. So back he came then went 4 more steps then a 1/2
