i have been in a huge slump for the majority of the season and im pretty sure its my speed. i have a slower ball speed with a medium amount of revs. all of my balls out hook the lanes. hand adjustment do not help in this situation. i need to increase my speed from around 13-14 to 16-17. what are the steps i need to take to increase my speed without compromising my timing and my accuarcy?

Since the length of your armswing is whats going to change your speed, your timing will inevitably have to change to a certain degree.

im more worried about the accuracy. i tried to totally free up my armswing the other day and i found i was consistently pulling the ball. im out of options. i will probably go to a coach this week. i would put up videos but my camera broke.

faster feet tempo and maybe a nice hinge. idk how u bowl but if u push it out and then down, try a hinge where u push like 3 inches then let it hinge instead of the big out and down.. the tempo helps too. i went from 15 to maybe 17 just changing from 4 to 5 step approach.. keep it in a good pace and not slow feet. you can fix ur timing a lot faster than u think. i learned the new tempo and everything like a month ago or not even that, and i just bowled my highest game ever. so i mean if ur willing to work at it, try getting faster feet, but stay in timing. Also if ur pulling maybe ur trying to throw the ball too much instead of letting the ball do more work? thats what i used to do. now that i dont try as hard to curve it, it actually is much stronger curve cuz im not pulling it. idk if any of this helped but if it does, Then alright =)

I dont know if fast feet are the answer here, personally thats my biggest downfall is when my feet get fast, also a few pros I know around here say that the slower your feet are the better, as long as you can do it consistently. There is a kid around here (Bubba you know who I'm talking about), stands up past the second set of dots, takes a 3 or 4 step approach very slow like hes walking on a sidewalk, gets all his speed from his backswing, the slow feet keep his head solid at the line and the backswing gets his speed and his accuracy. This kid is in his 20's and if he wanted to he could be in the top group of guys out on tour right now, he dominates regionals when he bowls them, very impressive. But the point I'm trying to make there is keep your feet slow if they are now, this will keep your head down on target and you wont feel rushed at the line, hold the ball higher up in your stance in the beginning and a little farther away from your body, have a free'ed up backswing and the speed will come. Dont muscle the ball and try to rip the cover off it, that will only cause you to lose speed, the free'er swing will cause you to gain the speed your looking for.

becasue you either grabbed at it, or your timming is off. Hold the ball higher and the swing will be longer which will produce more speed. Keep working on it and it will come together.

All of the advice that has been given is excellent, I would like to make a comment from a senior bowler point of view. My averge ball speed is around 13.5, and when my ball speed starts dropping off, I can bet it is because I have started releasing the ball at the foul line instead of getting it out on the lane. Also when I am releasing the ball at the foul line, I tend to pull it to the left, (right handed bowler). Good luck and I have faith that soon you will be doing 10 in the pit.

oh. well i meant tempo not exactly speed of feet.. nvm =P its just thats what they taught me cuz im backswing challenged ;)

I have the same issues. I enjoy bowling slower ball speeds and letting the ball do most of the work but some times when it is dry i don't have that luxuary. I actually uses a ball that is either polished or pealized and move right. The ball I use also is set up to break late. What helps me pick up more ball speed is to push the ball out later in my approach so I get a little quicker. Check out the video because it is hard for me to explain with my daughter pulling my shirt to play with her hahahha.

it is what a do when lanes are drier. I actually want to get a razor or a emeral vibe to replace my special agent seeing it is getting old and beat up but still comes through like a champ.
I don't know if this helps but I can get my mph from 14 or 15 which i usually like to roll. to about 17mph.
I try to make my changes minor

i had the same problem
so what my dad and i tried was hold the ball a little lower
that helped slow my speed down, it may help you

you're on the right track widow93, except he wants to increase his speed so raising the ball a little higher will help increase the speed slightly. might have to work with it a little to get comfortable with it though.

You could also try a up and out push away to create a pendulum like swing and it will add more speed on the ball. During your push away raise the ball 2-4 inches and just let your arm swing. Don't worry about getting fingers in the ball at first just get used to how the swing feels for a game or two. Then after you get a feel for it put some fingers in to it at the point of release

For what it is worth, I tend to get lazy and dont lift the ball like I should sometimes. When that happens, I lose accuracy and the ball speed falls off and reacts to the lanes really bad. You may want to try really lifting with your fingers and your foot speed and arm swing will soon catch up. Good luck

There's only three ways to increase ball speed:A higher backswing, faster footwork or a longer appoach. Or any combination of the three. All of them require a ton of practice time to get the timing down just right. Let's see...3 to the third power is,what....27 different combinations to weed through??? Or something like that. Good luck with it.

Personally a higher backswing is what works best for me. I find as long as you keep your first step slow, it keeps you in better rhythm and helps you keep the accuracy you sometimes lose with the higher swing.
